Tidbit Thursday: Yet Another Damn Sonnet

Tonight the moon looks like an ear
Silver and pocked behind strands of cloud.

It's been warm, but it was cold before.
The chrysalis that never hatched
Turned black, transparent, glittery, dull,

A shriveled fruit among the strawberry plants,
The unmistakable orange marks of a monarch
Just visible through its dark walls.

It's snowing tonight where my sister lives.
But it's warm here, and damp in the air.

We'll hide the chrysalis from the children
passively, leave it there, dead
among the browning leaves and dark.

Quiet. The moon is listening.
