Cover Me

Because it takes three layers just to go outside.

Because the barren ground lies invisible two feet under, the world above hidden in darkness.

Because swollen flakes cling and smother, fat and white like Frost's spiders, before melting into your pantslegs and mittens.

What can I say -- I'm a sucker for a good tongue-in-cheek session. Spun an all-covers extravaganza on tonight's edition of Tributary, and man, I'm still grinning.

Playlist follows, with a smattering of downloads for your downloading pleasure (and, this week only, I'll make others available via email, one per customer, to anyone who asks nicely). Enjoy!

Comments:
I WAS in Brattleboro last nite, but alas, I forgot you were on :( Anyway, I guess it's my job to step up at the plate and identify the original singers of (most of these) here songs...'cuz I want my Casey Kasem diploma.

Let's see:

Weezer -- Uptown Girl (billy Joel)
Mary Lou Lord w/ Semisonic -- Sugar, Sugar - The Archies (although they WERE NOT A REAL BAND)
Hayseed Dixie -- Highway To Hell - (AC/DC)
Les Claypool & The Frog Brigade -- Locomotive Breath (Jethro Tull)
Moxy Fruvous -- Spiderman (???? The spiderman cartoon theme?!? Um, er, well, the words were written by Stan Lee if that helps).
Tegan And Sarah -- When You Were Mine (mp3!) (Cyndi Lauper - although I LUV Tegan and Sarah, I cant picture anyone else but Cyndi Lauper singing it)
Richard Cheese -- You Gotta Fight For Your Right (beastie Boys)
The Bobs -- Helter Skelter (Beatles - the BOBS? The a capella group who did that friggin' Andy Kaufman song? THEY did Helter Skelter?!?! Eugh! )

Travis -- Baby One More Time (Britney Spears)
Keb' Mo' -- Love Train (the O'Jays)
Tim O'Brien -- Forever Young (WHICH versioN?! The Rod Stewart version, or the Dylan one?)
Timbuk 3 -- Born To Be Wild (Steppenwolf)
Ryan Adams -- Wonderwall (I take it it's the Oasis song, not part of the George Harrison Wonderwall Music soundtrack)
Laura Love -- Come As You Are (Which version? Nirvana or Peter Wolf????? I take it's Nirvana)

Johnny Cash -- One (mp3!) (it's U2...but it could be Three Dog Night version?????)

Presidents -- Video Killed The Radio Star (Buggles!!)
Shawn Colvin -- Every Little Thing He Does Is Magic (Stink and the P..oops, STING and the Police)
John Mayer -- Message In A Bottle (again, Stink..I mean STING and the Police...but you DIDNT COMPLETE THE POLICE COVER TRILOGY BY PLAYING DEMOLITION MAN BY GRACE JONES!! ERGH!)

Israel Kamakawiwo`ole -- Over The Rainbow / What A Wonderful World (Judy Garland/Louis Armstrong)
The Be Good Tanyas -- House Of The Rising Sun (traditional - but the Animals had the most recognized version)
Rice, Rice, Hillman and Pedersen -- Friend Of The Devil (Grateful Dead)

Peter Mulvey -- Oliver's Army (Elvis Costello)
Nikki Boyer -- Brain Damage (Pink Floyd)
Nenes -- No Woman, No Cry (Bob Marley)

That's 24!!!

Where's my Casey Kasem cert?

Shaw got ALMOST 24...he created an excellent compendium, but miscalled the following:

Tegan And Sarah -- When You Were Mine (mp3!) (Cyndi Lauper - although I LUV Tegan and Sarah, I cant picture anyone else but Cyndi Lauper singing it)
Cyndi certainly does a great version of it, but the original is by someone else...

Tim O'Brien -- Forever Young (WHICH versioN?! The Rod Stewart version, or the Dylan one?)I'll allow this, but Rod Stewart's is a version OF the Dylan original.

Israel Kamakawiwo`ole -- Over The Rainbow / What A Wonderful World (Judy Garland/Louis Armstrong)Judy Garland didn't author this...obscure trivia: anyone know the songwriter?

Can anyone out there identify the rest? Subway Joe? Spit on a Stranger? Slide? Deal, aka Don't Let Your Deal Go Down? Lonesome Tonight? Orphan Girl? You Don't Have To Do That?

No google allowed, of course!
